- Harriet started teaching in a one-room school in VT. In 1898, she was teaching the 5th grade at the Lincoln Boulevard School in Rutland VT. The story is told that her real given name is "Hattie" and that she assumed the name "Harriet" when she began teaching in elementary schools in Everett MA in the early 1900's. It sounded more dignified. She taught for thirty-five years at the Parlin Junior High on Broadway in Everett, retiring as of 31 March 1946. Most of the time she taught there, she walked the mile plus both ways from her home at 20 Boston Street, Malden.
