| Note |
- Ellen was the youngest child in her family. Her mother was 50 when she was born, Her name is Evelyn on her baptismal certificate. She was 6-7 years younger than the next oldest child. Her nickname was Ellie Fitz. Ellen was supposed to marry an older man, but she refused in order to marry Jerry CARROLL. Her family was against the marriage because Jerry was from a poor family. She was 23 when she married. No FITZGERALDs came to her wedding. Fr. Neilus remembered that Ellen was living at the O'CONNOR house in Kilcooley when she got married. However, her mother did give her a dowry. Ellen and Jerry used it to buy back the mortgage on the farm from Jerry's uncle Maurice. Ellen's mother came to see her for the first time when her oldest child, Anna, was born, and they reconciled. Some of Ellen's dowry money came from Garrit's wife's dowry, which was turned over to Ellen's mother and father when Garrit and his wife were married. Garrit was the oldest boy and was to inherit the family farm, so his wife had to bring a dowry with her in order to marry him.
Ellen came to America once. She came in 1955 and stayed with Julia (CARROLL) NAUGHTON in Milton. Usually, though, she was at home in Ballykealy, taking care of the family, the farmhouse, and cooking for the hired hands. Anna said that she would feed 15 people for the noon dinner, with 10 pounds of meat, potatoes, and multiple loaves of homemade Irish bread. Her daughters helped Ellen cook and take care of the house. Ellen was always busy, taking up needlework or mending in the evenings when the other work was over. Ellen was a dressmaker; she made all of the children's clothes with a hand machine. She learned dressmaking by spending each Friday with her sister Kate (Agnes' mother). She took a pinch of snuff from time to time. She played the fiddle.. She taught her son Jack to play, and he played at wakes and weddings. She also liked to play cards. She was short, about five foot two, stocky, with a long dress and little diamond stud earrings. She was buried with the earrings, as she wore them all the time.
She might have met her husband while he was at her house in Ballymacandrew playing cards and telling stories on Sunday nights. He would entertain them.
Her husband turned the running of the farm over to his eldest son Bob (Jeremiah) when he got older. Bob was not married, and thus had no children. Also, he was trying to modernize the farm. His parents were against this and wanted Bob to leave. There was a fight, as Bob did not want to leave, but he left. They brought in their other so Gerald back from Scotland to run the farm. Most of the relatives sided with Bob and did not speak to Gerald and Ellen. Bob went to Kit's house for two weeks and then he went to England and then on to Boston to live with Anna and work.
Shortly after Gerald came home, his parents signed the papers to turn over the farm to him. At the courthouse, Gerald CARROLL became the owner on May 6, 1952. For some reason, the deed was first transferred from just Jeremiah to Jeremiah and Ellen. The deed transfer stated that Gerald had to pay Jeremiah and Ellen 40 pounds per year and give them rights to the thatched end of the house. Ellen had been reluctant to sign, and she was treated coldly by Gerald afterwards. Doll got sick, and Ellen went to her house in Ballyheigue to help with the children. There was a family fight, and Ellen stayed living with Doll until she died. Ellen used to walk up to the grotto on the main Ballyheigue road and pray. Jerry stayed with Gerald and Sheila, who were very good to him. Jerry died first. Ellen died of senile decay at Doll's house in Buncurrig, Ballyheigue. She had been hit by a bike an was in bed for 9 months before she died. She was senile for 2 weeks before she died. Doll said that she was talking about her three dead children the day that she died. Doll had to pay for the funeral out of Ellen's small savings. Ellen and her husband are buried in the Ballykealy cemetery, but with their own family members and not together.
