Note |
- He was called the "Old Major," and also "Patsy." He was a good stonemason. He built round pillars around Ballykealy. He was a drinker. He fought with his wife, but never beat her. He was not a good farmer or businessman. He would have lost the farm if it had not been for his wife's single brother, Maurice McGRATH. Maurice took over the mortgage on the farm and thus saved it. When his son Jeremiah married Ellen, Ellen's dowry money was used to buy back the mortgage on the farm. Patrick kept 11 acres and a house and Jeremiah got the rest. It is unclear which land this was because land records were not in use at the time. The Ballykealy house was built on the very edge of their land, next to another farm. A widow lived there. There was no back door to the house, because that was not their land. He was over 70 when he died because he was getting the pension, per Anna NEVILLE. The pension was about one half crown. Doll remembers that he had gotten his pension and drank about 6 pints. A pint was about 9 pence. He went to his Aunt Sally's house at Banemore, and he died there on Christmas day. Kit remembers that her parents went into town for a drink, and Mossy CARROLL brought the news to the house. Her parents had just left the house to go into Tralee for a Christmas drink. Someone found them in Tralee to tell them to bring home a coffin. Jack CARROLL was about 16 at the time. He was a gruff man, and his grandchildren did not like him very much. He smoked a pipe, and he had a cancerous growth on his lip from it. Jack CARROLL had to get his grandfather on each Christmas night at 6pm to help him home after drinking.
