- He died as a child, either the same day as his brother Patrick or the Friday or Monday around that day. There was a diphtheria epidemic at the time, and this was his cause of death. He was only four years old. This was the second child named Peter. Peter was the name of Ellen's late father, so she must have wanted to have one child named after him.
Peter died at the age of five of inflammation of the stomach. He had been eating green gooseberries and he fell in the creek with heavy woolen clothes on
