Email from Joanne Gonsalves documenting a phone conversation with Barbara VOGT CLANCY (#0086), daughter of Lucien Eugene VOGT (#0077).....

I just talked to Barbara VOGT CLANCY. What a revelation ! I'll tell you the best part first, and then elaborate on the rest of the conversation.

Barbara has been to Isabelle's birthplace in Lorraine, France. A place called Nancy or Nancie, she didn't know the correct spelling. Anyway, she spent a lot of time with Gramma "Belle" when she was young (she is now 68) and the story she was told was that the family was never German. At one time when the Lorraine area was taken over by Germans, they changed all the French citizens names to German names, and that's the way they stayed. By the time it was a French possession again, the names were entrenched, so they kept them. This is what Isabelle told her. It doesn't necessarily mean it is true, but at least we now have a town to look in. Barbara also said that Isabelle's sister owned a shoe shop in Paris, and she was there also. I am going to send her the research I have, and she will fill in what we don't have. She was so excited to hear from me, and is planning on coming to Colorado in the near future. She is a widow for 14 years, and has a 'boyfriend' named Herman Levitz, who is a travel agent, and they go all over the country to Elder Hostels. The next place on the agenda is Colorado, and she said she will visit me. She is also already planning a big family reunion so our side of the family can meet and know her side. I really didn't expect such a reception.

Another tidbit. She said that Lucien and Albert originally lived with Gram NELSON after their father died, but she was so awful to them that they went to live with Isabelle. She also said she had met Gram NELSON several times, but that she was a hard and agressive woman. To be able to have contact with Dad and Marjorie and Harry, Lucien and Albert would have had to have no contact with Isabelle. Barbara said that her father had no use for his step-mother, and she had the same attitude towards them. Interesting to hear the other side of things.

Barbara has a bust of Lucien, that Isabelle carried over from France. It seems that a sculptor over there owed them money, and to pay them, he made a bust of Lucien. She also said that Paul sculpted most of the Lions around the city of Boston, including the ones at the BPL. There are stone lions outside the house in Everett. Do I remember you saying you saw them? She also said that Leon Jr. now lives in that house. At least I think she did. She was talking so fast at one point that I'm sure I got a few facts jumbled. I'll check on that when I mail her the information.

Barbara is also putting me in touch with Marie DERUBEIS, who is Matilda FORDE's daughter. Marie has also done a lot of research, and she said she would be able to give me a lot of information.

Other tidbits of info I wrote down as she was talking. ----- following:

Leon and Hazel VOGT live in Wakefield.

Albert Adrian's first daughter is named Helen. She is #89 on the descendant chart you sent me.

Anna GUERIN, Lucien's wife, died at age 57. (Barbara's mother) He re-married a lady named Helen REGALE, who also died before him. He died on Barbara's birthday, June 21, 1988, at 90 yrs of age.

Albert VOGT Jr. and Emily VOGT live in Arlington.

Barbara VOGT CLANCY lives in Worcester, at 4 Thornton Rd. Worcester, MA 01606.

Marie Forde DERUBIS lives at 25 W. Dover St. Everett, MA Phone # is 617-389-8020.

Is that enough for now? If it's true about the family being French instead of German, I'm going to be disappointed.

Talk about a convoluted family. New twists and turns all the time.

Hope you pick this up before the weekend. :)

By the way, I don't have your Internet Address at work anymore. I got trashed when it crashed. I don't have any letters from you at that address- at least that I can find. I just thought that if there was something you should know, I would alert you at work to pick up your mail at home. I know how busy you get.
