- Eugene Vogt is in possession of a copy of the OBITUARY for Patrick Carroll as printed in the Kerryman newspaper, Sept 1947.
From the Kerryman, Sept 1947:
Late Mr. Patrick Carroll, P.C., Ballyhemican, Ardfert
The death of Mr. Patrick Carroll, P.C., at his residence, Ballyhemican, Ardfert, on the 15th of September [1947], removed one of the best-known, respected, and esteemed Kerrymen of our time. Born in the year 1872, he was educated at Kilmoyley National School, then in charge of the late Mr. Michael Lawlor, N.T., of Causeway, and at the early age of 19 years he was appointed County Cess Collector, and 10 years later, Poor Rate Collector, from which position he retired in the year 1922. In addition to those offices, Mr. Carroll represented some of the leading insurance companies of Ireland, filled the position of County Court Officer for a number of years, and also carried on business as a shopkeeper and successful farmer. To his legion of friends he was known as "Patty Carroll" and endeared himself to all by his unvarying kindliness, humour, and charitable disposition. In the field of athletics he held no mean record. As a member of the Kilmoyley hurling team he played his first match against Aughabollogue, Co. Cork. Throughout life he had a strong and abiding affection for Father Tom Jones, the world's handball champion, and acted as a marker in a match in which the champion was engaged. He delighted in recalling a game when Father Tom gave an opponent 15 aces and emerged an easy winner. Above and beyond all his manly qualities, the late Mr. Carroll lived as a true and staunch Catholic and died fully fortified by the rites of Mother Church.
Connected with some of the most respected families in the county, his four brothers and two sisters predeceased him. His brothers, John, Thomas, and Nicholas had their homes in Indianapolis Indiana, USA, and his brother James, who was manager of Imposa Sugar Plantation, made his name in Triple Streams, Zuzuland, South Africa. Like so many of our exiled race, his sisters, Mrs. Thomas O'Connell of Indianapolis, and Mrs. James T. Carroll of Columbus Ohio, USA, also found their last resting place far from their native land. His brother-in-law, Mr. James T. Carroll, who first saw the light in Ballinorig, Causeway, reached the distinguished position of editor of the Catholic Columbian Publishing Company of Columbus Ohio. The deceased was uncle of the Rev. John P. O'Connell, C.S.C., professor at Notre Dame University, Indiana. Three of the deceased's five sons, Patrick, Bartholomew, and James, reside on the farm at Ballyhemican; John, another son, lives at 5 Oakpark Road, Tralee; and Thomas, who was a member of the Gardai at Union Quay, Cork, and now stationed at Stradbally, County Waterford. It would be wholly impossible to give anything like a complete list of those who attended the funeral to Ardfert Cemetery, representative of people from many counties of Munster, who gathered to pay their last silent and tearful tribute to a man who they felt and knew was a real friend and truly one of Nature's gentlemen.
The following clergy attended the obsequies and performed the last rites: Rev. Michael McDonnell, P.P., Ardfert; Rev. James Enright, C.C., Ardfert; Rev. Jeremiah McGrath, Adm., Aunascaul; and Revd. D. J. Finucane, P.P., Killorglin.
May he rest in peace.
