- Christmas 2003 letter from Sr. Cecilia
Christmas 2003
Dear Gene,
Loving greetings to you Lynn, Megan and Audrey for a very happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year. I hope 2003 dealt kindly with you, and that 2004 will do even better (D.V.) I'm fairly well myself, thank God, though I know that I'm slowing down, my balance is not as good as it used to be. The years take their toll.
We had a good summer, weather-wise. I spent a week in the Convent in Ballyheigue - most enjoyable. Doll CARROLL who lives nearby paid me a visit. She is the daughter of Jerry (the Major) CARROLL and would be a grand-niece of Grandma McGRATH (nee CARROLL). She is hale and hearty at 84! She had just been to a wedding at which she danced till 3 in the morning! I spent my usual week in Cape Clear, 'twas lovely there, but I miss Sr. Aloysius very much when I'm on the island - we were always together. While Cecilia, Nicky and Nessa O'LOUGHLIN were in Baltovin I stayed there, of course. Early in October I went to Dublin for a week - Sr. de Lourdes accompanied me as far as Heuston Station where I was met by Cecilia and Nicky. On the Sunday, we went for a drive with Nicky - down to the Glen of the Downs (Wicklow) - a most delightful place which I had never seen. On the way home, we took a walk on the sea-front in Bray.
Helen Lyons (CARROLL) visits me regularly, and we drive out to Fenit. Juliana C. (CARROLL) brought me to Knockbrack recently to see our cousin Micky McGRATH. He is 84, he told me, and he was in good form. His sister, Nora LAWLOR (London) writes to me and speaks on the phone regularly. She is confined to a wheelchair as a result of having a leg amputated a few years ago. Her family managed to bring her to Kerry last Easter, so she visited me here, and I met most of her family. They are really nice. One of her grandsons, Ludo SMITH (10 yrs old) is a bit of a prodigy as far as music is concerned. He attends the famous Newman's Oratory School in London.
I haven't much news of the KIRBYs, but Pat HIGGINS and Angela (CONNOR) called here in September. They spent most of the summer in Mayo where Pat now owns the old home, they even escaped New York’s “three days’ darkness.”
I hope to spend a few days in Baltovin while Cecilia and Nicky are there (D.V.) Rest assured I'll be looking forward to hearing all the VOGTs’ news.
Love to you, Lynn, Megan and Audrey,
Sr. M. Cecilia
