Obituary: Victor Emmanuel DeRubeis of Everett, retired head of the Everett High School Foreign Languages Department, died Monday at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Brighton after a brief illness. He was 79.

Born in Tussio, in the Abruzzi section of Italy, Mr. DeRubeis came to the United States in 1924 with his family and settled in Malden.

He attended Malden public schools and was a 1933 graduate of Malden High School, where he was an all-scholastic two-way guard in football. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1937 and his master's degree in 1941 from Boston College.

Mr. DeRubeis introduced the study of Italian in Everett when he began teaching in September 1937. He also taught world history and English for many years. He retired in 1979 after more than 40 years at Everett High School.

In November 1992, he had completed a term as president of the Military Intelligence Association of New England, an organization of those who served in counter-intelligence - popularly known as spycatchers - during World War II.

Mr. DeRubeis served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was assigned to the counterintelligence corps attached to the 5th Army's 45th Infantry Division and saw action when the Allies were surrounded at Anzio beachhead near Rome in 1943. His assignments also included North Africa, Rome and Florence.

He remained active in the U.S. Army Reserve until his retirement as a colonel in 1967.

Following the war, Mr. DeRubeis returned to Everett High School. He founded the school's Italian Club, which became known for its annual plays and musical presentations - done entirely in Italian - that celebrated Italian history and culture.

In 1964 he became the head of the foreign languages department, and established the Multi-Language Lab, a self-paced program in which students could learn any language they chose using programmed tapes.

He was an avid golfer, bowler, artist and gardener.

Mr. DeRubeis was a former president of the Everett Teachers Association and of the St. Therese Holy Name Society of Everett, and was a former Christian doctrine teacher at the parish. He was a member of VFW Post 834 in Everett and the Anzio Beachhead Veterans of World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Marie F. (Forde); a son, Victor Edward of Malden; two daughters, Frances M. Meidell of Chelmsford and Maureen J. Savage of Winchester; a sister, Esther Giordani of Eastchester, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. tomorrow in St. Therese Church, Everett.

Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Everett.

Arrangements are by J.F. Ward Funeral Home, Everett.
