Dear Joanne,
This is a very sad time in our family and I know you would want to be aware of this. My brother Owen died on December 28th having battled with cancer for nearly 7 years. We all miss him. Even though he was very ill for the last few days of his life, we really expected him to recover. Two years ago he was very ill and he recovered and was able in July 2009 to walk Sarah, his only daughter and the light of his life, up the aisle. At that time eighteen months ago he was in the best of form and later was totally besotted with little Patrick, his first grandchild, who was christened on Sarah's first anniversary in July of last year. Owen was in hospital in Dublin for about 4 weeks before his death and it was my great privilege to visit him almost every day. It was probably the most time we spent together since we were children and we really enjoyed it.Most of that time he was so positive and we had great times chatting and laughing and reminiscing. I was there with Claire and his children when he died peacefully at 11.30 pm on December 28th. He was taken back to his home in Tipperary where hundreds of people came to say goodbye to him over two days. This is a very old Irish tradition and gives great comfort to the family. Our cousin Aidan O'Carroll from Tralee and his daughter Aisling --who is training to be an opera singer--came to the church and added greatly to the funeral Mass. Owen was Pats's twin and would have been 65 in March.
Lots of love,
Mary.
