James J. Lordan, Sr., a resident of Medford for over ninety years, passed away at home on August 21. He was 96. Jim was born in Somerville on Nov. 5, 1919, son of the late Daniel and Margaret T. (Buttimer) Lordan. He moved to Medford with his family in 1923 and grew up on Court St. The family later moved to Sheridan Ave. He graduated from Medford High School in
1938. Jim loved sports from a young age and spent many hours playing baseball at Park Street Park, now known as Hickey Park. He and his late brothers, John and Joe, belonged to the Park Street AC. He played baseball for St. Francis Church, managed and played for the Doherty Club and belonged to the Medford Redskins. In high school, he was a member of the MHS baseball team, managed the MHS football team from 1934-1937, and belonged to the “M” Club. Jim was a former member of the Medford Elks and the Medford Legion. He was a member of St. Joseph’s parish for 60 years.
Jim enlisted in the US Navy in 1940. He was in the reserves until being called up to active duty after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served in the Pacific on LST 712 and was honorably discharged at the end of the war. Before the war, Jim was employed by CE Twombly Co. on Main Street in Medford. After the war, he was self-employed, working as a customs weigher at Davis & Hough, 88 Broad St., Boston. He retired in 1984 from First National Stores as a warehouse manager. In retirement, he worked part-time 25 years as a starter at Unicorn Golf Course in Stoneham. He was an avid golfer, his true passion.
Jim was the husband of the late Jean M. Frazier Lordan, former teacher at the Osgood School and Hobbs Jr. High School in Medford. He was the brother of the late Mae Ahern, Betty Harrington, Bob, John, Frank and Joe Lordan. He is survived by two sons, James J. (Jay) Lordan, Jr. and his husband, Paul Harsha of Cambridge and Kevin T. Lordan of Medford. Grandchildren, Kelly and Connor Lordan of Lynnfield and several devoted nieces and nephews.
A wake for Jim will be held at the Gaffey Funeral Home, 43 High St., Medford Sq. on Wednesday from 4-8. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Church, 114 High St., Medford on Thursday at 11:30 followed by burial at Oak Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
